Monroe, NC Plumbing FAQs: Straight Answers to Read Before You Call

Most plumbing calls start with a question you cannot answer yet: is this safe to leave, whose problem is it, do I need a permit. The answers below use what the City of Monroe, Union County, North Carolina and the gas utilities have published, and say plainly where something depends on your address.

When water or gas is the emergency

What should I do first in a plumbing emergency in Monroe?

Close the main shutoff valve, usually where the water line enters the house, then open a faucet at the lowest level to drain the pipes. Stay clear of water that has reached outlets, appliances or the electrical panel. If you smell gas, leave the building and call from outside. Then call (833) 571-0120 and tell us where the water is coming from and whether the shutoff worked.

Should I use my own shutoff valve or the one at the water meter?

Use the shutoff at your house. Monroe's city code says valves on the supply side of the meter are operated only by City employees, with one exception: a plumber may operate the meter box valve in an emergency. If your house shutoff will not turn, say so when you call, and leave the valve in the meter box alone.

What should I do if I smell gas?

Leave the building and call from outside. Duke Energy's gas safety guidance says not to use a cellphone, light switch or matches inside, and notes that the odor can fade, so do not go back in to check. Customers of the City of Monroe's natural gas service can call the emergency line at 704-282-4600, and the City says to call 911 immediately if the smell is strong. In Indian Trail, the Town names Piedmont Natural Gas at 1-800-752-7504 and says to get to a safe place and call 911 for a gas break. A plumber is not the first call; piping repairs after the utility has cleared the house come afterward.

What do I do about a frozen or burst pipe?

Close the main shutoff, open a faucet at the lowest level, and move belongings away from the wet area. A frozen pipe may already be split where you cannot see it, so check for water once it thaws. Our page on a pipe that split or froze covers what to look for and what to tell the plumber.

Is water damage cleanup a plumber's job?

The plumber stops the source and repairs the pipe. Removing standing water, drying the structure and pulling out wet material is a separate job, described on the page about water that reached the floors and walls, which lists its own phone number. Stop the water first, because drying cannot start while a pipe is still leaking.

Sewer backups, cleanouts and who is responsible

Is a sewer backup my responsibility or the City's?

The City of Monroe says the owner keeps the flow path open from the building through the service connection to the main, and that the City maintains the mainlines and manholes. If several homes on your street are backing up, or sewage is coming out of a manhole, call the City's overflow and blockage line at 704-282-4601. If only your house is affected, start at the cleanout and call a plumber. If the stoppage seems to sit near the street, ask the City directly where its responsibility begins.

Where is my cleanout, and what if the cap is damaged?

The City describes the cleanout as a pipe with a white threaded cap. If you cannot find it, or the cap is cracked or missing, mention that when you call so the plumber knows what access exists. How a backed-up sewer line gets diagnosed explains what happens next.

Do I need to call 811 before a sewer or water line repair?

If the work involves digging, yes. NC811 asks for notice three working days before digging, by calling 811 or 1-800-632-4949. The service marks public utility lines but does not mark private lines on your property, so the plumber still has to trace those another way.

Could heavy rain be causing my sewer problems?

We have no Monroe-specific data linking rain to backups, so we do not claim a pattern. What does help is the symptom: if several drains slow or back up at the same time, the stoppage is probably in the main line rather than at one fixture, and that is worth a call to the City's line at 704-282-4601 if you suspect the main.

What should never go down the kitchen drain?

The City of Monroe asks residents not to pour grease down the sink or toilet. Let it cool, scrape it into the trash, keep food scraps out of the disposal and use a sink strainer. Those habits matter more than any product, and clearing a kitchen drain is the next step when a line has already narrowed.

When does trenchless lining fit a sewer pipe?

Lining suits a pipe that is cracked, rooted or leaking at the joints but still intact enough to hold a liner. A collapsed or badly sagging section usually calls for bursting or a short open-cut repair, and a camera inspection is what shows which one your line allows. How trenchless lining and bursting compare is set out on its own page.

Why does my drain keep clogging after it was snaked?

One drain that clogs again and again usually has a problem in its own branch, such as grease, scale or a root that a cable only punches through. Several slow drains point to the main line. when snaking stops working describes the heavier cleaning, and a camera look can show what is left behind.

Water heaters, permits and who may do the work

Do I need a permit to replace a water heater in Monroe?

Inside the City of Monroe, permits come from the City's Building Standards office at 704-282-4524. Union County says its Building Code Enforcement office, 704-283-3816, issues building permits in all parts of the county except Monroe and Waxhaw. Union County says a like-for-like water heater replacement, with the same fuel, location, capacity and venting, does not need a permit and that a change does. We could not find the City of Monroe's own rule on this, so ask the City's office before assuming it matches. The County also says a double fee applies if work is done without a required permit.

Can I replace my own water heater?

North Carolina rule 21 NCAC 50.0506(b) requires a license to install or replace a water heater. The exception is an owner working on their own home when it is not for sale or rent. Gas and venting work carry real safety risks even where the exception applies. What the swap involves is laid out on its own page.

How do I check a plumber's North Carolina license?

Ask for the license number and the name it was issued under, then confirm it with the North Carolina State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating and Fire Sprinkler Contractors, the board that licenses plumbing contractors. License details are available from us on request before work begins.

Why is my water heater not giving hot water?

Look first for water around the base of the tank. A leaking tank cannot be repaired and has to be replaced. If the tank is dry, a failed part is possible, and the checks that separate a repair from a replacement are on the repair page. If you smell gas near a gas heater, leave and call the utility.

Is a tankless water heater worth it for my house?

It depends on three things the unit cannot change: the size of the gas line, the electrical capacity if it is electric, and where the vent can run. A house that needs upgrades to any of the three costs more to convert. Whether a tankless unit suits your house walks through the questions to ask first.

Leaks, water damage and insurance

How can I tell if I have a hidden leak?

Turn off everything that uses water, then watch the meter. If the dial or leak indicator keeps moving, water is escaping somewhere between the meter and the fixtures. A water bill that jumps with no change in use is another sign. Locating a leak before opening a wall explains what a plumber can and cannot tell from the outside.

Why does my toilet keep running on its own?

Usually a worn flapper or a fill valve that does not shut off completely, and both are small parts compared with the water they waste. A few drops of dye in the tank show whether the flapper is leaking into the bowl. The toilet repair page walks through that test.

What are the signs of a leak under the concrete floor?

A warm spot on the floor, the sound of running water when everything is off, and a meter that moves with the house quiet are the usual signs. We do not claim that most Monroe homes sit on slabs. If yours does, leaks in lines under the slab covers locating and repairing them.

Does homeowner's insurance cover a sewer backup or flooding?

The North Carolina Department of Insurance says a standard homeowner's policy does not cover flood, and excludes sewer or sump backup unless you add an endorsement, as well as seepage. Read your policy and call your agent before work begins, because what is covered is decided by the policy, not by the plumber.

How much does a plumbing repair cost?

It depends on access, the pipe, the fuel, the permit and the scope, so a number in a web page cannot know it. The page on what common jobs cost gives wide ranges for the jobs that have them and says what moves the price. Ask for a written scope before you agree to work.

Do you handle plumbing for businesses?

Yes. Restroom fixtures, kitchen drains and main-line stoppages at a shop, restaurant or office are covered on the page about plumbing at a business. Grease trap rules and backflow testing depend on your property, so ask the City of Monroe's Water Resources Department what applies to yours.

Who do I call about water quality in Monroe?
