Garbage Disposal Repair in Monroe, NC: Reset, Clear the Jam or Replace the Unit

A garbage disposal fails in three ways. It hums and will not turn, it stays silent, or it leaks. Each has a different cause, and one of them means the unit is finished. Turn off the power at the switch before you check anything, and never put a hand inside.

The cabinet under a sink holding a garbage disposal, a white trap and a filter with blue and yellow tubing, with a hand reaching toward the filter.
The disposal hangs below the drain, so a leak at its base or joints shows inside the cabinet.

Hum, silence or leak: what each one means

SymptomLikely causeWhat to do
Hums but the blades do not turnA jam from a hard object or packed wastePower off, then turn the blades by hand from underneath with the hex key if the unit has a socket
Silent, no humA tripped reset button or no powerCheck the reset button on the bottom of the unit and the switch and breaker
Leaks at the top of the sink drainA failed seal or a loose mountingReseal or tighten the mounting, which is a repair
Leaks from the side or bottom of the bodyA cracked housing or failed internal sealReplace the unit
Leaks at the drain pipe or dishwasher hoseA loose clamp or a worn gasketTighten or replace the fitting

Safe steps before you call

  1. Turn off the switch, then the breaker.A disposal that is only switched off can still start if the switch is bumped.
  2. Never reach into the unit.Use tongs or pliers to remove anything you can see from above, and nothing more.
  3. Press the reset button. It sits on the bottom of most units and trips when the motor overheats.
  4. Use the hex key.Turn the blades back and forth from underneath until they move without resistance.
  5. Restore power and test with water running. If it hums again or leaks, stop and call.

If the sink backs up even with the disposal off, the problem is the drain beyond it, not the unit. See a clogged sink line.

What should not go down a disposal

The City of Monroe's guidance on fats, oils and grease advises keeping food scraps out of the garbage disposal, never pouring grease down the sink and using a sink strainer to catch solids. Grease passes through the disposal as a liquid and hardens further down the line.

Most manufacturers also warn against stringy or fibrous scraps such as celery, against coffee grounds and bones in quantity, and against starchy foods that swell in the pipe. Check the manual for the unit you own.

Run cold water while the disposal is on, and for a short time afterward, so the waste moves through the trap and does not settle in the bend. Our page on kitchen sink repair covers the faucet and sink side.

A strainer at the drain opening catches scraps before they reach the disposal.

Odors, noise and slow draining: not always a failure

A disposal that smells is usually carrying food residue, not failing. Run cold water, a little dish soap and a handful of ice, then flush with water, and the smell often goes.

A grinding or rattling noise means something other than food is inside, such as a utensil or a bottle cap. Switch it off at the wall and the breaker, and remove the object with tongs from above.

If the sink drains slowly but the unit runs normally, the restriction is probably in the trap or the line beyond it, not the disposal.

Repair or replace the unit

  • How old is it?The label on the body gives a model and date code. An older unit with a new leak is a weak case for repair.
  • Where does it leak?A seal at the flange or a hose clamp is a repair. A leak from the body is a replacement.
  • How often has it jammed?Repeated jams point to a worn motor or an undersized unit for how the kitchen is used.
  • A burning smell?Stop using it. A motor that overheats repeatedly has worn out.

Ask the plumber to price the repair and the replacement side by side, so you choose between real options.

What a replacement involves

A new disposal bolts to the sink flange under the sink and connects to the drain trap and, where there is one, the dishwasher hose. If the dishwasher connects to the disposal, a plug in the new unit's inlet has to be knocked out, and a missed plug leaves the dishwasher unable to drain.

The unit also needs power, usually a switched outlet under the sink. If the existing wiring is not suitable, an electrician may be needed, and the plumber should say so before quoting.

Ask whether the old unit's mounting ring fits the new one, because many do and some do not.

What to have ready when you call

  • The make and model. It is printed on a label on the body, and it tells the plumber whether parts or a swap are likely.
  • How it is switched.A wall switch or an air button on the countertop changes how the unit is tested.
  • Whether the dishwasher drains into it.That connection matters for both repair and replacement.
  • What changed first.A new noise, a smell, a leak or a spoon that went missing are all useful clues.

Garbage disposal questions from Monroe homeowners

Is it safe to put my hand in a jammed disposal?

No. Switch off the power at the wall and the breaker, and use tongs or pliers for anything visible. Turn the blades from underneath with the hex key instead of reaching in.

Why does my disposal keep tripping the reset button?

The motor is overheating, usually from a jam or from a worn unit. If it trips again after you clear the jam, the motor is likely failing and a replacement is the better call.

Can I put grease down the disposal if I run hot water?

The City of Monroe says never to pour grease down the sink. It cools and hardens in the pipe beyond the disposal, which is how many backups begin.
