Plumber in Indian Trail, NC: Know Who Handles Your Water, Sewer and Gas Before You Call

When something goes wrong with the plumbing in Indian Trail, the first question is often not what is broken but who owns it. Water, sewer and gas each come from a different provider here, and the answer decides whether you call a utility or a plumber. This page sorts that out, then tells you what to expect from our plumbers.

These come from the Town of Indian Trail's own utilities page. Look at your most recent water bill to see which company serves your address, because the boundary between providers does not follow a street map you can guess from.

None of this replaces a plumber for what is on your side of the meter. It tells you whom to call when the problem might be on the utility's side, such as no water at all on the street or a main that is overflowing.

Where we work: Indian Trail and the Monroe side of Union County

Indian Trail is about nine miles from Monroe.

A gas smell in Indian Trail

The Town of Indian Trail names Piedmont Natural Gas as the gas provider and says to move to a safe place and call 911 for a gas line break or other emergency. If you smell gas, leave the building before you do anything else, call 911 and Piedmont from outside, and do not use a switch or a phone indoors.

The piping repair is a separate job once the utility has made the house safe. What a repair involves, and the questions to ask, are covered on repairing gas piping after a leak.

A drain backup: private side or utility side?

The Town's utilities page does not say who is responsible for sewer service lines, and we have not found a source that does. The City of Monroe's rule that the owner keeps the flow open from the building through the service connection belongs to the City's own system, so do not assume it applies in Indian Trail.

The practical approach is the same everywhere. Check whether only one fixture is slow, which points to a branch inside the house, or several fixtures back up together, which points to the main line. Look for the cleanout near the house, usually a capped pipe at ground level. If water stands in it, the blockage is downstream of the house, and a call to Union County Water at 704-296-4210 will tell you whether the utility treats that stretch as its own.

For anything on the private side, clearing a backed-up household drain explains how stoppages are found and cleared, and repairing a damaged sewer line from house to street covers repairs that go further than clearing.

Who issues plumbing permits in Indian Trail

Union County says its Building Code Enforcement office (704-283-3816) issues building permits in all parts of the county except Monroe and Waxhaw. Indian Trail is not named as an exception, and the County's online permitting service lists plumbing permits. The County says a permit is needed for a plumbing addition or a change in design, and that a like-for-like water heater replacement, with the same fuel, location, capacity and venting, is exempt. We could not find a Town page on plumbing permits, so confirm with the County before work starts. The Town's main line is 704-821-5401.

Ask the contractor to say whether your job is like for like and who pulls the permit if it is not. North Carolina also requires a plumbing license to install or replace a water heater, with an exception for an owner working on their own home when it is not for sale or rent. License details are available from us on request before work begins, and the same should be true of anyone you hire. See swapping out a tank water heater for how the like-for-like test works in practice.

Indian Trail plumbing questions

Who do I call if the water stops on my street in Indian Trail?

Start with your water provider. The Town lists Union County Water at 704-296-4210 for most of the town and Carolina Water Services at 1-800-525-7990 for a small part of Beacon Hills and Crismark. If water is off only inside your house, check your main shutoff, then call a plumber.

Who owns the sewer line from my house to the street in Indian Trail?

The Town's utilities page does not say, and we have not found a source that does. Ask Union County Water at 704-296-4210 where the utility's responsibility begins at your address before you pay for a repair on that stretch.

Does a water heater replacement in Indian Trail need a permit?

Union County says a like-for-like replacement is exempt and a change is not. The County issues building permits everywhere in the county except Monroe and Waxhaw, and Indian Trail is not named as an exception, so start with Union County Building Code Enforcement at 704-283-3816.
